ANDERSON, Ind. (AP) – An Anderson man was shot to death after being stabbed by an intruder when he and his wife returned home from a day at the Indiana State Fair in Indianapolis. The victim was Melvin Gillock, 26. Police said his wife, Bonni, 23, told them they had surprised the gunman when they returned home Saturday night. She said her husband entered the house first to make certain everything was alright, a habit of his. He motioned his wife to enter the home but when she did she saw a man pointing the couple’s .22-caliber rifle at her husband, police said. Police said the intruder had cut Gillock’s face with a knife and the assailant attempted to make Gillock walk down to the basement. Mrs. Gillock said her husband, who was a hemophiliac, fainted and fell to the bottom of the staircase. The gunman shot him twice in the back as he lay unconscious, police said. Police said the man took Mrs. Gillock upstairs to the couple’s bedroom, where he tied her to a bed with neckties and raped her. Police said the man took the murder weapon, a portable television, a window fan and Mrs. Gillock’s watch and jewerly. Police said he untied the woman before he left and told her not to call the police for an hour. He left in the couple’s new car, which was found on a Madison County road Sunday with the interior burned. – jlr
